For such a precise and comprehensive table of measures, here
exists a great deal of imprecision: what is a “heaping” tablespoon? In 1903,
when people had such things as dessertspoons that differed from tablespoons,
and when coffeecups differed from teacups, these things made reliable sense. The
gill has disappeared as a measurement from contemporary cookbooks, replaced by
fractions of a cup.
